Principal's Message

Welcome all to the web-site of Raid Laban College. This college was established in 1984 with classes starting with a handful of students, however over the years the college has grown by leaps and bounds inspite of many hurdles on its path of growth and development.

The college will be celebrating its silver jubilee with the launch of this website.

I would like to thank all the staff both Teaching and Non-Teaching for their undying devotion to their duty in serving the students of this college student who come not only from Meghalaya but the entire North East and the neighbouring country Bhutan.

Raid Laban college was established by forming a Governing body with J.D. Pohrmen as its founder president and Mr. S. Nongbri as its Founder Secretary in August 1984. In the following day the members approached the North Eastern Hill University with an application to start a new college.

The College started with a paltry enrolment of 78 students in all the three streams of Arts, Science and Commerce. The College was formally inaugurated by the then eminent educationist (L) Dr. D.N. Borthakur, then Director ICAR on the 10th of April 1985 with a small gathering of social workers and well-wishers.

The 16th of April 1985 was the opening day of the college, which now faced a huge hurdle, to find a laboratory for the science practical classes. It is here in our eventful history that we will never forget the generosity of Mrs. K. Rapsang and  her family who donated the entire amount of setting up a laboratory which was inaugurated by the then Minister of Education of Meghalaya Dr. R.C. Laloo. Then came the most important task of getting an affiliation with NEHU one of the requirements was a Reserve Fund of Rs. One lakh. These again the generosity of two business magnates who believed in giving back to society, offered their generous contribution to the college, we are fore very indebted to (L) Mr. Shrolenson Marbaniang and Mrs. Modrik Nongkynrih for their timely help and contribution. The college was given Affiliation in June 1986 and Permanent Affiliation in 16th July 2003 vide reference no. CDC.A/23/96-2001/-1030. The college is enlisted under section 2f and 12(b) of the University Grants Commission Act of 1956 since 7`h October 2004, vide reference no. F.8-95/2004(CPP-1). Together with its academic curricula the College also has an NCC Unit as well as an NSS unit to allow students to grow not only academically but also physically and spiritually into better human beings. Being aware of the shifting paradigm of modern day education the College also has regular workshop and counseling sessions with various NGOs like Kripa Foundation which sensitizes our young people to the pressure of their peers, parents and society. The College has had an eventful history even as it is perhaps one of the youngest college in Meghalaya, yet it has emerged as one of the elite institutes in Shillong.
